What have I done and learn

The year 2009 was very productive as was the year 2008. I had some goals at the beginning of this year, but not many because I thought that I would be further in making the wedding dresses that I am currently. I am sure that the reason why not, is that I am nervous about the results of the project. Below here are my year 2008 plans and how I managed to execute them:

- more socks

I didn’t make any normal hosen this year for me.

- Viking Finn outfit for me

I made a fancy outfit (and bought jewellery, shoes etc. and made a necklace for the outfit) and an outfit for cooking at campfire. I learned a little about making bronze spirals and used the skill to make a fancier apron.

- new wollen tunic, pants (Viking) etc. for UlfR

UlfR needed new clothes... so he got a new (Kragelund style) shirt, kitchen shirt, braies, hosen, (and I bought leg wrappings and shoes for him also). Sahra made him a naalbinded hat with fox fur decoration and a fancy cloak with wolf fur.

- finish naalbinded mittens

I finished my first naalbinded mittens at the end of January. After that I made mittens for UlfR, Elsa and Sigrid... I didn’t made any mistakes making Sigrid’s mittens so I thing I have learned the mittens now.

- naalbinded socks

Yep, I made two socks for me and one for UlfR. UlfR also got another socks from Tofa :).

- practise tablet weaving (haven’t done that for about 5 years)

Yep, I did some tablet weaving, but I want to learn and practise more that as soon as possible.

- food food foood... do more medieval/renaissance food at home (simply because it is fun)

I didn’t made food and write about it as much as I wanted...(Oh! congrats for reading this far.. but the blaa blaa is still continuing :D)

- continue Assisi table cloth project

Just a little bit... so the project is still in progress.

- a Flemish jacket? and lot of other things. I know that I might need more clothes for next Cudgel War maybe another kirtle and another smock.

I made a Flemish kerchief and I love it! I still want to make a Flemish jacket... hopefully next year.

-And also I am going to take a class of hardanger embroidery during this winter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardanger_embroidery. I am hoping that the class will help me understand how to make reticella.

Yep, I was there (but I didn’t finish the Hardanger tablecloth I started.. and I didn’t have time to learn reticella or any lace at all..)

- maybe practise smocking and lace making?

Not yet but soon I’ll start (hope so!!).

Also I did some vegetable dyeing which was a real fun. And I participated to our Barony’s handsewing challenge (BUT it looks like I don’t ever have enough time to count my seams.. there haven’t been enough time after summer(!) so it I might have to drop out from it). I made an outfit for me to wear at our Investiture and also my very first renaissance man’s shirt for UlfR. I made a naalbinded hat for Jon and for Vilhelm using the Finnish stitch. And I learned the Oslo stitch and made two other hats using it.

Vuosi 2009 oli ehkä tuottoisampi vuoteen 2008 verrattuna. Minulla oli joitain tavoitteita tälle vuodelle, mutta ei monia, koska tiesin, että häävaateprojektit veisivät aikaa. Loppujen lopuksi en olekaan saanut aikaiseksi niin paljon häihin liittyviä asioita, kuin olin ajatellut. Syy on ehkä siinä, että olen asettanut itselleni liian korkean riman asioiden suhteen enkä uskalla ryhtyä toimeen (tai pelkään, että olen lopulta pettynyt lopputulokseen). Tässä olisi tiivistettynä mitä tuli tehtyä verrattuna suunnitelmiin:

- lisää sukkia

En ehtinyt tekemään (tosin yhdet on aloitettu) kangassukkia tänä vuonna.

- Muikkarit minulle

Tuli tehtyä yhdet vähän paremmat ja yhdet nuotiolla kokkaamiseen soveltuvat vaatteet, lähinnä euralaisia esikuvia soveltaen (pukuihin tuli myös ostettua koruja, kenkiä, lautanauhaa yms.). Lisäksi opin pronssi-spiraalikoristelun alkeita ja tein esiliinan, jonka kulmiin laitoin Kaarinan muinaispuvun esiliinaa mukaillen esiliinan jokaiseen kulmaan koristeet.

- UlfRille uusi villatunika, housut (villaiset Viikinkiaikaiset) ja niin edespäin

UlfR tarvitsi uusia vaatteita, joten tein hänelle Kragenlundin paidan mallisen aluspaidan (tähän päädyin erityisesti, koska halusin kokeilla paidan kaavoitusta, joka on varsin jännä), lisäksi tein keittiöhommiin soveltuvan pellavapaidan, baraies-alushousut ja niihin kiinnitettävät villaiset hoset. (UlfRille ostettiin myös säärikääreet ja kengät) Sahra teki UlfRille sudenkarvalla koristellun hienomman villaviitan ja ketunkarvalla koristellun neulakinnaspipon.

- Neulakinnaslapaset loppuun

Ensimmäiset neulakinnaslapaset sain valmiiksi tammikuun lopussa. Sen jälkeen teinkin vielä lapaset UlfRille, Elsalle ja Sigridille. Sigridin lapasissa ei ollut enää näkyvissä selkeitä virheitä, joten voi sanoa, että kehitystä on tapahtunut.

- Neulakinnassukat

Tein itselleni kahdet (ja yhdet kokeiluversiot, jotka olivat ensimmäiset ja joissa kantapää oli aivan kamala) ja UlfRille yhdet. Lisäksi UlfR sai Tofata yhdet neulakinnassukat, joten sukkia on (vaikka voisi niitäkin tehdä lisää).

- Harjoittele lautanauhan tekemistä (edellisestä kerrasta oli kulunut suunnilleen viisi vuotta)

Tuli harjoiteltua, muttei riittävästi.. ensi vuonna pitää jatkaa harjoituksia..

- Keskiaikaisen ja renessanssinaikaisen ruuan kokkailua kotona ja bloggailua

Tätäkään ei tullut tehtyä riittävästi.. vaikka se on todella hauskaa puuhaa! (Onnittelut, olet lukenut tätä postia jo näin pitkälle, mutta jorina jatkuu vielä :D)

- Assisi-tyylillä tehdyn pöytäliina-projektin jatkaminen

Tätä jatkoin eteenpäin vain hyvin vähän. Projekti tuntui ylimääräiseltä ja jäi taka-alalle.

- Flaamilaistyylinen 1500-luvun naisen takki, lisää vaatteita Nuijasotaan yms.

Takkia en ehtinyt tekemään… mutta haluan tehdä sen ehdottomasti heti kun vaan on aikaa. Sen sijaan tein flaamialaistyylisen päähineen, josta pidin paljon.

- Hardanger-kurssi kansalaisopistossa, jos vaikka sen jälkeen ymmärtäisi paremmin reticellaa ja muita pitsintekojuttuja. Harjoittele smokkausta ja reticellaa.

Kurssilla käytiin, alkeet opittiin, mutta liina jäi kesken. Muita pitsijuttuja en ehtinyt edes miettimään vuoden aikana kunnolla. Smokkaukset ja reticellat jäi kokeilematta, mutta toivottavasti/ todennäköisesti pääsen tekemään niitä pian.

Lisäksi tuli värjättyä kasveilla lankoja pitkästä aikaa, mikä oli todella hauskaa. Osallistuin myös Aarnimetsän paronikunnan käsin ompelu –haasteeseen (tosin näyttää pahasti siltä, että haaste jää minun osaltani kesken, kun en ehdi koskaan laskemaan tehtyjä saumoja… viimeksi on ollut aikaa laskea saumat kesällä.. ja kun en enää muista koska olen ompelukonetta käyttänyt, voi sanoa, että saumoja on kertynyt ihan kiitettävästi kesän jälkeen). Investituura -tapahtumaa varten tein itselleni aluspaidan ja päällysvaatteet, päähineen jne. Ja UlfRille ensimmäisen renessanssinaikaisen miehen paidan. Neulakinnasta tuli harjoiteltua myös pipon muodossa. Tein Jontulle ja Vilhelmille pipot ja treenasin Oslon pistoa kahden pipon verran.

This weekend we stayed at home and I have tried to rest (that didn't happen) and do things that need to be done (not enough progress with those either). Still 10000 things to do before Sticks and Stitches event. I feel *very* tired now.. But I decide today that I will try to write shortly in Finnish after each posts because many of my readers are from Finland. Lets see if it's going to feel odd or not.

Tänä viikonloppuna oltiin ihan kotosalla ja yritin levätä (en oikein onnistunut) ja tehdä kaikkia niitä juttuja, joiden pitäisi olla tehty (enpä saanut riittävästi aikaiseksi). Olisi vielä 10000 asiaa tekemättä ennen Keppiä ja Käsitöitä tapahtumaa. Ja nyt väsyttää (ja särkee), joten hyvät yöt ja palataan asiaan pian <3.

I decide not to write about last weekend and the things that I have been doing yet. I want to do more research first. I still have a major problem with starting to make something new and make research after that. It would be better to try to learn as much as possible before starting to make things. But it is sometimes too easy just to start making something after seeing some pictures or somebody wearing something at the event and only after that start finding more information about the item. Maybe I think that I am in hurry and I have to start making something and I think that I don’t have time to open books and internet… I have to promise myself to read more and start at the beginning..

I mean that at first there is a thought about the thing I want to make, let’s say it is a certain type of tunic from some certain time period. Ok, so I want to make this tunic.. now I will not go to my fabric boxes and start making it… instead of I will open a book and internet and try to find information about it. After that I will decided what type of seams I want to make. And after that I’ll find the fabric and the sewing thread. And if it needs a pattern I’ll make one.

Blaa blaa… anyway, the second naalbinded hat (made using the Oslo stitch) is done. I made it last weekend. There are no pictures abut it because it is a gift for somebody who might read this. I am aware that I should be doing things for our wedding… and I have already done something but not enough. For these projects I have made research before starting to do things.. but not enough yet.

Tomorrow I will go to Helsinki Book Fair with Tofa like last year. And next weekend is going to be once again Lahti Handicraft Fair and we are going to be there with Medium Aevum Hollolense re-enactment group. It’s going to be more than awesome!! So I’ll go to pack things and go to bed.
