I have been bad

… not writing any blog posts lately.. not even read blogs. That doesn’t mean I haven’t done anything in meanwhile….

There is a great challenge (Drachenwald 30 day challenge) going on in Facebook. The challenge is to pick something you want to improve and do that for 30 days.. and of course report your progress in group wall. I decided to choose 14th century cooking. Something that I have not done as much as other periods. I will read and test some recipes and put them to my cooking blog Let hem boyle. I will also be head cook with UlfR at February 2013 Midwinter feast event. So I will continue my challenge until then, which means that the challenge will take more than those 30 days. Feast will be as much as 14th century as possible.

I have been also sewing and making tablet weaving. I have so many projects going on at the same time so it feels like I haven’t finish anything lately. Well, I haven’t. But I have made a promise to me that I will do at least 30 minutes of hand sewing or tablet weaving/ day. That has helped a little bit.

Last weekend there was Dies St Anna event where I was a head cook with UlfR. That took a lot of my time away from other projects during last month. At the beginning of next year I start my journey as our barony’s seneschal so I have to divide my sewing/cooking time with society bureaucracy. That is an interesting challenge aswell.

Olen ollut tuhma enkä ole kirjoittanut yhtään blogitekstiä pitkään aikaan enkä ole lukenut muiden blogeja. (Parannan tapani välittömästi). Siitä huolimatta on tullut tehtyä kaikenlaista, joskaan ei mitään valmiiksi asti, koska projekteja on hieman liikaa käynnissä samanaikaisesti.

Naamakirjassa on meneillään hauska 30 päivän haaste (Drachenwald 30 day challenge). Haasteen tarkoituksena on parantaa jotain taitoa 30 päivän aikana. Päätin valita itselleni 1300-luvun ruokaan liittyvän haasteen, jossa luen mahdollisimman paljon aiheesta ja kokkaan ruokablogiini Let hem boyleen ruokaa tuolta ajalta. Haasteeni kestää helmikuussa järjestettäviin Sydäntalvenjuhliin saakka, jossa tarkoituksena olisi toteuttaa pidot mahdollisimman pitkälle 1300-luvun mukaisesti.

Lisäksi olen ommellut paljon ja tehnyt lautanauhaa. Pyrin tekemään päivittäin vähintään puoli tuntia käsin ompelua tai lautanauhaa, jotta projektit edistyisivät.

Viime viikonloppuna oli Annanpäivät tapahtuma, jossa oli pääkokkina Uffen kanssa. Ruokien suunnittelu vei taas ison osan viime kuun vapaa-ajasta. Ensi vuonna harrastusaika jakaantuu seuran hallinnollisen puolen ja käsitöiden sekä ruuanlaiton kesken nyt kun vuoden alusta minusta tulee seuran puheenjohtaja. Mielenkiintoinen haaste sekin :).

Dress workshop weekend part 1

Fall is finally here! And so is the dress workshop I have been waiting for. Last weekend was the first workshop weekend (fri-sun). The workshop is held at Mynämäki Art and Craft College and the teacher of the workshop is Mervi from Hibernaatiopesäke blog. The schedule at the first weekend was flexible so we managed to add a shopping tour to fabric stores and a haberdasher. Also when Mervi and one student suddenly decided that they need to vegetable dye wool that we found at fabric store (cause the colour of the fabric wasn’t that good) they made it happen! The result was very pretty madder coloured fishbone wool. Most of the students are newbies in making historical clothing (pre-renaissance). The tips that we got from Mervi are priceless.

The first thing that she made us all do was to think about what kind of a persona we are making the clothing for. What is the status of that persona and what kind of acessories and items the person would have had at that time. That made me think a lot about the decisions that I make when I am planning my new projects. But maybe more about that later.

So what did I do at the workshop? I have made one 14th century dress before and I am not very satisfied with the result. Maybe one of the reason was that I just made the dress and thought nothing about what I am doing. I want to join my passion for cooking to my clothing and I want something 14th century. So nothing fancy then, something that suits for worker/ peasant or at least is close enough. I got an idea. So I cut my yellow wool from Medeltidsmode to make a simple Herjolfsnes dress. It will be a dress that can be used under other wollen dresses if needed. I will make it fitted with front lacing. While cutting the dress I thought about what kind of headwear and acessories the persona would use.

What else? Well I cut white linnen for smocked apron (something I have always wanted to make but no hurry to finish it) and cut a new Viking underdress (wollen) for me. That Viking dress I need next year, so I am in no hurry with that project either.

Next step is to sew sew sew...

Syksy on vihdoin täällä! Ja niin on Mervin mekkokurssikin, jota olen odottanut jo pitkää. Viime viikonloppuna oli ensimmäinen kurssiviikonloppu (pe-su). Kurssi pidetään Mynämäen käsi- ja taideteollisuusopistossa. Ensimmäisen viikonlopun aikataulu oli siinämäärin joustava, että ehdittiin tekemään täsmäisku Turun kangaskauppoihin ja lankakauppaan. Jopa kankaan värjäämiseen löydettiin aikaa ja tilat, kun sitä tarvittiin. Käsityövinkit, joita Merviltä saatiin viikonlopun aikana, olivat kyllä kultaakin kalliimpia.

Heti ensitöikseen Mervi käski meitä ajattelemaan hetken, minkälainen henkilö olisi käyttänyt asua, jota olemme tekemässä. Mikä voisi olla henkilön status ja minkälaisia asusteita ja tavaroita henkilöllä olisi voinut olla. Se saikin minut lopulta miettimään hieman syvällisemminkin sitä, millä tavalla itse normaalisti valitsen ja mietin, mitä olen oikeastaan tekemässä. Vai mietinkö ollenkaan. Ehkä siitä myöhemmin lisää.

Haluan yhdistää kiinnostukseni ruuanlaittoon ja sen minkälaisen asun itselleni teen. Halusin tehdä uuden 1300-luvun mekon, mutta siten, että keskittyisin tällä kertaa vähän syvällisemmin miettimään mitä olen tekemässä. Niinpä päädyin mielessäni työvaatteeseen, joka olisi ensimmäinen kerros villaa alusmekon päällä. Yksinkertaiseen Herjolfsnes mekkoon, jossa on edessä nyöri. Ehkä tulevaisuudessa saan ylleni vielä toisen villaisen, vähän astetta paremman (mutta maltillisesti) pyhämekon. Otin ja leikkasin kurssilla Medeltidsmoden keltaisesta villakankaasta uuden mekon, jonka vuoritan ylhäältä pellavalla. Samalla mietin kovasti, minkälaiset päähineet ja asusteet tämän vaatteen kanssa sopisivat.

Mitäpä muuta? No leikkasin valkoisesta pellavasta smokattua essua varten kappaleet (projekti, jonka olen aina halunnut tehdä, mutta jolla ei ole kiirettä) sekä villaisen alusmekon ruotsalaisen viikinkiolkainmekon alle. Sitä tarvitsen vasta vuoden vaihteen jälkeen.

Nyt sitten vaan neula käteen ja ompelemaan!

Has been quiet, yes

I will try to update as soon as possible what has happened lately. Also I will try upload all the photos that I have been meaning to upload to Picasa soon. This weekend we will have the Aarnimetsä Investiture event and UlfR and I will step down and our reign will be over. After that I should have more time for blogs :).

Huhuu.. hiljaista on ollut. Yritän saada päivitettyä pian, mitä kaikkea viimeaikoina on tapahtunut. Lisäksi tarkoituksena olisi ladata picasaan kaikki ne valokuvat mitkä ovat tältä vuodelta lataamatta. Tulevana viikonloppuna vaihtuu valta Aarnimetsässä, eli meidän on aika siirtyä paronillisten tehtävästä muihin tehtäviin. Sen jälkeen pitäisi olla enemmän aikaa blogeillekin :).

I don't remember.. need to check that one :D. It's 15th of March 2008. So that means today it's my blogs birthday! OMG.

2. Mistä kirjoitat blogissasi, mitä se käsittelee / what do you write about?

Well, I write all kinds of stuff about re-enactment... mostly visiting museums, events and crafts.

No tuota, kirjottelen kaikenlaista historianelävöityksestä. Esim. museoreissuista, tapahtumista ja käsitöistä.

3. Mikä seikka tekee blogistasi erilaisen muihin blogeihin nähden / what makes this special?

Comparing to other re-enactment blogs.. hm..? I dunno.

4. Mikä sai sinut aloittamaan blogin kirjoittamisen / what made you to start writing?

I wanted to learn more English. I thought it long time and finally had enough courage to start writing.

Halusin oppia lisää englantia. Mietin asiaa pitkään, kunnes vihdoin sain riittävästi rohkeutta aloitaa.

5. Mitä haluaisit muuttaa blogissasi / what would you change in your blog?

I am not completely happy with Blogger. I am trying wordpress for now and if it looks better I might move my blog there.

16.12.

Couple fine events like Aarnimetsä Academy and Dies St Anna are now behind and I have started some new projects and started to make plans for next year. Looks like next year will be busy :) . This year has been different than two years before. It can be seen in the numbers of my blog entries also. Having a wedding at May tooked lots of my energy and strenght from blogging and making new things. Also putting almost all my will, strenght, love and energy to our wedding dressess made me feel little bit unispired of anything new after the wedding. I am still very happy about things that I have learnt this year, for example I learned about how to make smocking.

But now I feel like it is time for something new and probably something different. I will say now Merry Christmas for everybody and I will return blogging here after Christmas with hopefully full rested and full of energy for starting the fun things that I have planned for next year!

Muutamat mahtavat tapahtumat kuten Aarnimetsän akatemia ja Annanpäivät ovat nyt takana. Olen tällä välin aloitellut uusia projekteja ja tehnyt suunnitelmia ensi vuodelle. Näyttäisi tulevan kiireinen vuosi :). Tämä vuosi on ollut monella tapaa erilainen sitä edeltäviin kahteen vuoteen verrattuna. Tämän voi havaita jo pelkästään blogikirjoitusten määrässä. Toukokuussa vietetyt häät veivät paljon voimia ja energiaa blogin kirjoittamiselta ja kaikelta muulta. Lisäksi pistin melkein kaiken tarmoni, energiani ja voimani häävaatteiden tekoon, mikä aiheutti sen, että häiden jälkeen inspiraatio uusien projektien aloittamiseen ja vanhojen jatkamiseen oli melko kadoksissa. Olen silti iloinen kaikesta siitä mitä olen ehtinyt vuoden aikana oppimaan, esimerkiksi siitä, että opin smokkaamaan.

Nyt tuntuu siltä, että on aika uusien tuulien ja uusien projektien. Siispä sanon nyt jo Hyvää Joulua kaikille ja palaan kirjoittelemaan tänne joulun jälkeen toivottavasti hyvin levänneenä ja täynnä energiaa kaikkien hauskojen juttujen aloittamiseksi!

Since Eevanpäivät event (which was weekend before last weekend) I have been in flu having no energy or strength to do anything. The event was great :D despite of little rain there was archery competition, heavy fighting… and little bit mushroom picking in forest. It wasn’t raining all the time.. And the food and the company was excellent! I manage to have the Birka jacket done for the event. It looks plain because there aren’t any decoration. I want to make tablet weaving decoration to it, but haven’t have energy to start making the loom. Sahra took some pictures..

Magdalen Yrjänäntytär gave me a surprise gift at the event. It is a fabulous rosary and I am very exited and happy to have this beautiful item. She made it for me in Canton of Poucca colours white and green.

Magdalen also have two blogs. One is about glass and glass beads (http://helmitaulu.blogspot.com/) and one is about re-enactment. She writes in Finnish.

I have also read lately Ilari’s blog “Mullan alta” with great interest. Ilari is a member of our society and he writes about he’s life as a student of archaeology. Unfortunately this is also only in Finnish.

Eevanpäivien jälkeen (eli toissa viikonlopun jälkeen) olen ollut flunssassa, eikä ole ollut oikein energiaa tai voimia tehdä yhtään mitään. Tapahtuma sen sijaan oli mahtavan hauska! Pienestä ajoittaisesta sateesta huolimatta oli jousiammuntaa, rottinkitreenejä.. sekä vähän sienien keruutakin. Värjäyssieniä ei ehditty löytämään. Mutta Sahra on kyllä aikamoinen tehopakkaus myös metsässä, täytyy sanoa. Meni ehkä muutama minuutti kun löytyi ensimmäinen (ja tosin ainut) kanttarelli. Ruoka oli myös mahdottoman hyvää kuten seura :). Birkan takki valmistui tapahtumaan ja oli siellä päällä ensimmäistä kertaa. Takki näyttää ehkä vähän pelkistetyltä vielä, kun koristus puuttuu. Tarkoituksena on luoda lautanauha koristeeksi heti kun ehtii ja jaksaa. Tuossa muutama kuva ylhäällä..

Sain Magdalen Yrjänäntyttäreltä aivan mahtavan hienon yllätyslahjan tapahtumassa. Magdalen tekee mm. lasihelmiä ja oli tehnyt hienon rukousnauhan Poukan pitäjän väreissä :D. Magdalen kirjoittaa myös blogia. Hänellä on niitä kaksi: toinen lasista ja lasihelmistä ja toinen historianelävöittämisestä.

Olen myös seurannut viime aikoina suurella mielenkiinnolla Ilarin Mullan alta blogia, arkeologian opiskelijan elämästä. Kivaa päästä lukemaan kaivauksista, kun me tavalliset tallaajat saadaan niin huonosti tietoa niistä ylipäätään. Todella mielenkiintoista!

Again couple weeks has gone very fast, almost too fast in my opinion. Looks like our autumn will be very busy also :D. Two weekends ago we went to Häme Medieval Market. Our purpose was to go there with Sahra, Knut and Ilona as normal tourists (but with the proper clothing of course). Ilona had her camera with her at the market and she took some very good photos. I was tiny bit “camera envious” and realized that I want better camera. This photo is my favourite (Sahra, Ilona and I sitting at Elzebeth’s canopy. Hannele took the photo, if I remember right:

The weekend was very good in many ways. We stayed at Sahra and Knut’s. On Sunday we made our projects together. Sahra helped me to cut a Birka jacket and I helped her to fit her 16^th century kirtle. Birka jacket is almost done... and it happend to me also.. the tablet weaving braid that is also almost done (for the jacket decoration) is too small. Btw. Sahra is now writing also in English!

Long waited Maku magazine’s September issue has finally come out. Last year at Häme Medieval Market we made food with (Sahra, Elzebeth, Minttu, UlfR etc.) there at camp fire and the magazine made an article about us. The article is very good and definitely worth of waiting.

Last weekend we went to see Pukkisaari Iron Age Market for the first time. We went there only shortly but we liked the atmosphere and the place very much! Next year we should spend more time there :D.

Taas tuntuu, että aika kuluu hurjaa vauhtia, ettei ehdi edes hengähtää. Syksystä on tulossa kiireinen muutenkin kaikin puolin. Muutama viikko sitten kävimme Hämeen keskiaikamarkkinoilla piipahtamassa päivävierailulla kuten normaalit turistit (tosin asianmukaisesti pukeutuneena). Ilonalla oli hyvä järjestelmäkamera mukanaan ja hän otti erittäin laadukkaita kuvia tapahtumasta. Omaa kännykkääni katsellessa ja sen kameran huonohkoja kuvia selatessa totesin, että olisi hienoa saada parempi kamera.. saisi parempia kuvia blokiinkin.

Tuossa ylhäällä yksi, mielestäni parhaiten onnistunut kuva Sahrasta, Ilonasta ja minusta Elzebethin katoksesssa. Taisi olla Hannelen ottama kuva.

Viikonloppu oli muutenkin tosi hyvin onnistunut. Vietettiin aikaa Sahralla ja Knutilla ja sunnuntaina tehtiin yhdessä keskeneräisiä projekteja. Sahra auttoi minua leikkaamaan minulle Birkan takin ja minä autoin Sahraa sovittamaan 1500 luvun alushameen yläosaa. Birkan takki on nyt melkein valmis.. mutta niinhän siinä taisi minullekin käydä, että takkia varten aloittama lautanauha (joka myös on kohta valmis) näyttäisi jäävän liian lyhyeksi. Ei auta kuin aloittaa uuden tekeminen, sitä ennen pitäisi kai löytää jostain lisää lankaa.

Kauan odotettu Maku-lehden syysnumerokin on vihdoin ilmestynyt. Vuosi sitten Hämeen keskiaikamarkkinoilla toimittaja teki juttua meistä lehteen. Hyvin onnistunut artikkeli ja odotuksen arvoinen!

Viime viikonloppuna kävimme ensimmäistä kertaa Pukkisaaren muinaismarkkinoilla. Tunnelma oli todella miellyttävä ja muutenkin tapahtuma sekä paikka mukava, joten ensi vuonna pitää mennä ihan ajan kanssa uudestaan!

21.5.

Eight days left. All wedding dressess and head dressess done (only my hosen are not done yet.. but I am consciously making the hosen slowly). Most of the planning is done also. Now I have finally time to read other blogs and write mine :). I have time to think about what I will do next. There are so many things I want to do. Maybe I write a list at first and then I know more. I want to start some bigger projects. I would love to have new clothes for Summer Coronation but there is not enough time for that. I am afraid that we can’t use our wedding dressess there because it’s a camping event and our clothes are not very good for walking in mud. We will have Cudgel Wars event this summer also and I have to make some clothes for that event also and we’ll have other duties and things to do for the event also. But I try not to think about SCA stuff before the wedding.

Kahdeksan päivää jäljellä. Kaikki häävaatteet mukaan lukien päähineet valmiit (ainoastaan sukat on kesken, mutta teen niitä tietoisesti hitaasti). Suurin osa suunnittelustakin on tehty. Nyt on vihdoin aikaa lukea blogeja ja kirjoittaa omaa :). Lisäksi on aikaa miettiä mitä tekisin seuraavaksi. On niin paljon asioita mitä haluaisi tehdä. Haluaisin aloittaa joitain suurempiakin projekteja. Haluaisin uusia vaatteita kesäkruunajaisiin Saksaan, mutta ei taida olla riittävästi aikaa siihen. Häävaatteita siellä ei oikein voi käyttää, koska tapahtuma on telttailutapahtuma ja meidän häävaatteet ei oikein sovellu mudassa tarpomiseen. Myös tämän kesän Nuijasotaan pitää tehdä vaatteita ja lisäksi on jotain muitakin juttuja mitä pitää tehdä tapahtumaa varten. Yritän kyllä kovasti olla ajattelematta SCA asioita ennen häitä.

Only couple weeks left until our wedding. I have learned a lot this year.. mostly how to make smocking and how to draw patterns for UlfR (I haven’t done anything this complicated before) and that I hate handsew velvet and silk together (it’s very slow and frustrating). Clothes are not completely done yet and because I have again inflammation or something in my shoulder I will have to use little bit machine. But other than that life is good, spring is here and I can’t wait the wedding day :) .

Vielä muutama viikko aikaa häihin. Olen oppinut aika paljon tänä vuonna.. lähinnä smokkaamaan ja tekemään UlfRille kaavoja (en ole aikaisemmin tehnyt mitään näin monimutkaista) ja oppinut vihaamaan silkin ja sametin ompelua käsin (koska se on hidasta ja turhauttavaa). Vaatteet eivät vielä ole ihan valmiit ja koska olkapäässä on ongelmia joutunen käyttämään ompelukonetta muutamissa saumoissa. Muuten elämä rullaa hyvin, on kevät ja ihanaa mennä naimisiin :).

Busy

Life has been crazy lately. I really don’t have time to write much about our journey to Insulae Draconis (England) two weeks ago and Winter Eve event which was held last weekend. At this point I don’t have much space to write things down to my HUGE calendar.. it is so full of things that has to be done. Next three weeks and weekends I will try to do something about it. I have had some health issues also that have not helped the situation. A big event Midwinter Feast is coming here at Barony of Aarnimetsä and we have many things that need to be done before that.

Anyway 8^th of January we travelled to Insluae Draconis (England) for 12^th night Coronation. We didn’t have any problems with the weather (we were lucky and it wasn’t snowing when we drove care from Gatwick to Lyndhurst and the roads were not icy). Only bad thing in weather that weekend for us was the chilly wind. It was lovely to see old friends and make new ones! Altogether the event was very nice.. people were nice and food was very good. I am sure that we want to go to Insluae Draconis again when we have money and time.

But now I have to do wedding plans and wash linen for the shirt that I am making for me.

Elämä on ollut kamalan hektistä viime aikoina. Minulla ei ole oikeastaan kamalasti aikaa kirjoittaa matkastamme Insulae Draconikseen (Englantiin), jonka teimme kaksi viikkoa sitten eikä Talvi-ilta tapahtumasta joka taas oli viime viikonloppuna. Tässä vaiheessa järjettömän isossa kalenterissani ei ole edes tilaa kirjoittaa ylös niitä asioita mitä pitäisi tehdä. Yritän saada seuraavan kolmen viikon aikana tehtyä asioita mahdollisimman paljon pois. Lisäksi minulla on ollut jotain terveysongelmia (lähinnä flunssaa ja tulehtunutta koipea) mitkä eivät ole juurikaan auttaneet tilannetta. Suurehko Aarnimetsän paronikunnan tapahtuma, Sydäntalven juhla on tulossa ja monta asiaa pitää vielä saada päätökseen ennen sitä.

Joka tapauksessa kahdeksannen päivän tienoilla tätä kuuta matkustimme Insulae Draconikseen eli Englantiin juhlimaan loppiaiskruunajaisia. Meillä ei ollut loppujen lopuksi ongelmia sään suhteen (meidän onneksi ei satanut juurikaan lunta kun ajoimme Gatwicikstä Lyndhurstiin ja tiet eivät olleet kovin jäisiä). Ainut huono asia säässä oli kylmä tuuli. Mutta oli mahtavaa nähdä vanhoja tuttuja ja tutustua uusiin ihmisiin! Kaiken kaikkiaan oli mukava tapahtuma.. ihmiset olivat mukavia ja ruoka hyvää. Ihan varmasti halutaan uudestaan mennä Insulae Draconikseen heti kun on aikaa ja rahaa.

Mutta nyt on tehtävä hääsuunnitelmia ja pestävä pellavaa, josta teen itselleni paidan häihin.

Stick and stitches

Last weekend we went to Stick and stitches event. It was the first event for Village of Routakero but everything went so smoothly that it felt like they have done this before. UlfR was more than pleased about having a chance to play with sticks. All in all they spend almost 6 hours in armours. At the same time others made their unfinished handicraft projects and start new ones.. also Sahra taught different naalbinding techniques for those who were interested. I spent most of the time making my new naalbinded knee length socks (pictures coming soon). It was very relaxing event, good food, good company, enough sleep :D. Ah.. and the mushroom pie was excellent!! For this event UlfR had new braies and new chausses to wear and new shoes. Also he has new woollen leg wraps, but I have to fix them little bit before he can wear them. I am trying to write a separate post about this as soon as I have time. Now there are only three weeks before Dies St Anna event. I am not going to make anything new for the event.. Instead I am going to (trying to) relax and do some cleaning here (I heard a rumour that Christmas is coming, maybe not yet but soon…).

Viime viikonlopun vietimme Keppiä ja käsitöitä tapahtumassa. Tapahtuma oli Routakeron kylälle ensimmäinen, joskaan se ei tuntunut siltä, koska kaikki sujui niin mallikkaasti. UlfR oli enemmän kuin innoissaan päästessään harjoittamaan keppijumppaa (rottinkitaistelua). Kaiken kaikkiaan taistelijat viettivätkin lähes kuusi tuntia haarniskoissaan. Samaan aikaan me muut teimme sisällä keskeneräisiä käsitöitä ja aloitimme uusia.. unohtamatta Sahran mainiota neulakinnasopetusta (tarjolla oli mahdollisuus oppia useita eri pistoja). Minä taas tein uusia polvimittaisia neulakinnassukkiani (joista kuvia lähettelen heti kun sukat ovat valmiit). Tapahtuma oli rentouttava, oli hyvää ruokaa, mainiota seuraa ja sain riittävästi unta (mikä on harvinaista) :D… ja päivällisellä tarjottu sienipiirakka oli todella hyvää!! Tätä tapahtumaa varten tein UlfR:lle uudet braies-tyyppiset miesten (alus)housut ja villaiset lahkeet, lisäksi olimme tilanneet hänelle uudet kengät. Ja uudet jalkarätitkin olisi, villaiset, mutta niitä pitää vielä vähän fiksata ennen kuin niitä voi käyttää. Ajattelin kirjoitella näistä lisää heti kun on enemmän aikaa. Annanpäiviin (seuraavaan tapahtumaan) on enää kolme viikkoa aikaa. En ajatellut tehdä mitään uutta Annanpäiviä varten.. sen sijaan ajattelin yrittää ottaa rennosti ja siivoilla täällä (koska Joulu on kuulemma kohta tulossa).

I decide not to write about last weekend and the things that I have been doing yet. I want to do more research first. I still have a major problem with starting to make something new and make research after that. It would be better to try to learn as much as possible before starting to make things. But it is sometimes too easy just to start making something after seeing some pictures or somebody wearing something at the event and only after that start finding more information about the item. Maybe I think that I am in hurry and I have to start making something and I think that I don’t have time to open books and internet… I have to promise myself to read more and start at the beginning..

I mean that at first there is a thought about the thing I want to make, let’s say it is a certain type of tunic from some certain time period. Ok, so I want to make this tunic.. now I will not go to my fabric boxes and start making it… instead of I will open a book and internet and try to find information about it. After that I will decided what type of seams I want to make. And after that I’ll find the fabric and the sewing thread. And if it needs a pattern I’ll make one.

Blaa blaa… anyway, the second naalbinded hat (made using the Oslo stitch) is done. I made it last weekend. There are no pictures abut it because it is a gift for somebody who might read this. I am aware that I should be doing things for our wedding… and I have already done something but not enough. For these projects I have made research before starting to do things.. but not enough yet.

Tomorrow I will go to Helsinki Book Fair with Tofa like last year. And next weekend is going to be once again Lahti Handicraft Fair and we are going to be there with Medium Aevum Hollolense re-enactment group. It’s going to be more than awesome!! So I’ll go to pack things and go to bed.

2.6.

It’s summer time and everything is relax... not. I have only one weekend not planned full at this summer. It is not a new situation... it’s like this every year. There is too much things to do at summer and summer is always too short. There are always some things that I would like to do but I have no time for it. It looks like we are not able to go to Tofa’s herbal party because it’s one week before the Summer Coronation. We need to plan Cudgel War’s foodstuff and time is running up very fast. Again we are going to make lunches and snacks at Cudgel War (nine days long event). It is also my only summer vacation so I am waiting for that very much. The situation with the foodstuff is not bad at all, we have many ideas written down but it takes quite lot time to write everything to the computer (every recipes and lists). And then there are the clothes I was planning to do before the Summer Coronation. I had hopes to have something new for UlfR for next weekend’s Summer Nights event.. I don’t have many days left. I have to harden our new leather shoes with beeswax before using them (I might need some tar for soles.. or something heavier than beeswax) and UlfR’s Kragelund tunic is almost done and his naalbinded socks but I haven’t started to make the pants yet. And my blue linen Eura style underdress is not even nearly done. I think that I am just little bit too tired today. I went to Helsinki yesterday because I had a work related meeting there (had to woke up crazy early … 5 a.m.). But I found some long pepper at Hakaniemi market place after the meeting so the trip to Helsinki wasn’t fruitless :D. I better go to sew little bit more and go to bed early. Next weekend is going to be fabulous. I am quite sure about it!

Vegetable dyed threads

Usually I don’t have to work during weekends, but today was exception. After work I went to a small gift store called Päkäpirtti. It’s at OId Rauma (Old Rauma is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites... Old Rauma is the largest unified historical wooden town in the Nordic countries. And it is in middle of Town of Rauma, where I am working so I am always thought that my worksite is very unique and very beautiful place). The gift shop Päkäpirtti is as I descript small but very interesting because there is quite large selection of vegetable dyed wool threads. I am highly recommending the shop for every re-enactor! I also have to tell that the shop keeper is very nice person, I spend about one hour talking with her about dyeing and re-enactment and herbal things. I bought one yarn of yellow (dyed with tansy flower), one yard of red (dyed with Cortinarius semisanguineus mushroom) and one yard of green (probably dyed with tansy and meadowsweet) wool. I also love baskets so I bought this small basket at Rauma Spring Fair today.

Computer problems solved and socks

I am so happy that our computer is finally fixed, thanks Robert! The problems took too long in my opinion (over a month). It is very frustrating when you can’t use your computer at home. It feels like you are missing a limb or something. I have to admit that I am that I am very much hooked on computers. But anyway yesterday Elsa and Robert take a short visit to us. It was very nice to have quests (we seldom have). They promised to come to visit us more often, next time after two weeks :D. Elsa and I made plans for Elsa’s dress and for her Flemish kerchief. And plans for lots of other things. Today I finally made my order for some of the fabrics for our wedding dresses. I am still thinking about ordering some very light weight hemp and some medium hemp for our shirts. Ordering the fabrics from the internet was the biggest order for me this far (from internet I mean), so I am looking for very anxious what’s going to happen.

My first naalbinded socks are done. I made the socks last weekend for me (to wear at summer with the Viking shoes). I have started to make socks for Ulf also. Sahra is making at the moment a woollen cloak with real wolf fur decorations for Ulf. She is thinking about having it done till Summer Coronation. Can’t wait to see the finished cloak..

Tired

I didn’t sleep very well last night.. maybe I was thinking about this weekend and going to the Hukka Spring Ball event. There is nothing to stress about with the event, I am just making some simple snacks there. Well... I don’t know. Next weekend I will be at home and “rest” (read: do handicrafts). This week at home I have been mostly at the computer reading emails and planning the coming weekend. But I had little bit time to start the tablet weaving project that I have with Sahra. She has been busy and made one ribbon already.. I have just started.. but the ribbon that I am making looks very nice. I am taking Elsa’s unfinished mittens to the Spring Ball and if I have some spare time I will try to do some naalbinding. I have also updated the web pages (just added some links)...
