Since last post...

From beginning of this year to mid February I spend most of my time planning foodstuff for Midwinter Feast (I wrote about the challenge and feast to Let hemboyle). We had the most awesome kitchen crew ever and so much fun!

I finished Jon's baggy pants for Winter Eve event (held in mid January). The pattern is the same that I used for UlfR's pants.

I started to make a woollen underdress for me that was supposed to be done for Winter Rosala. But I didn't have enough time to finish it (not even close). But I managed to finish UlfR's new shirt for the event.

Sahra wrote well about Winter Rosala in her blog. You can see at the end one of the reason why I have been busy lately and will be. Our book will be published in English too!

Kaikenlaista on tullut tehtyä edellisen blogipostauksen jälkeen. Vuoden alusta helmikuun puoliväliin aika kului nenä kiinni kirjassa kun suunnittelin Sydäntalven juhlien pitoja (tähän liittyvästä haasteesta ja pidoista olen kirjoittanut Let hem boyleen). Meillä oli tapahtumassa mitä mainioin keittiöporukka, jolle iso kiitos kokkaamisen onnistumisesta!

Käsitöitäkin on tullut tehtyä. Jonin uudet pussihousut valmistuivat Talvi-Ilta tapahtumaan (järjestettiin tammikuun puolivälissä). Housujen malli ja ”kaava” on sama kuin UlfRin housuissa.

Aloitin tekemään uutta villaista viikinkiaikaista alusmekkoa Talvi Rosalaa varten, mutta en saanut sitä valmiiksi ajoissa. Sen sijaan UlfRin uusi villainen paita valmistui ajoissa.

Sahra on kirjoittanut mukavasti omassa blogissaan Talvi Rosalasta. Lopussa on kerrottu myös syy siihen, miksi (muun muassa) minä olen ollut kiireinen viime aikoina, eli keittokirjaa on käännetty ja se ilmestyy myös englanniksi!

More tablet weaving and a shirt

I started this tablet weaving band just before Christmas (with help of Sahra) and finished it on the day after Christmas. It will be a trim for UlfR's new wollen shirt that is half way done. The band is from Kaukola Kekomäki (Finnish Iron Age), pattern by Maikki Karisto. Original was 7 mm wide, mine is 1 cm. And it is 2 m long. Sahra teached me some very useful tricks for weaving. The most useful is that can now see what colour will appear to the band next, which means less possibilities to make mistakes and easier to unweave them if I make one.

Jon's shirt is also done as I wrote last time. Now the Masku band is also sewn to it.

Jouluksi piti saada tekemistä, joten aloitin uuden nauhan (Sahran avustuksella). Kaikki luppoaika meni ”kudonta-asemalla”, jossa kutojan moottori toimi suklaalla. Nauha on UlfRin uuteen villaiseen paitaan, joka on puoliksi valmis. Nauha on Kaukolan Kekomäen löytöön perustuva rautakautinen nauha ja malli on jälleen Maikki Kariston. Alkuperäinen oli 7 mm ja omani 1 cm. Pituutta nauhalla on 2 metriä. Sahra opetti minulle muutamia erittäin tärkeitä juttuja lautanauhojen kudontaan liittyen. Tärkein lienee se, että osaan nyt katsoa mikä väri muodostuu nauhan pintaan seuraavaksi. Se vähentää virheiden tekemisen mahdollisuutta ja toisaalta helpottaa virheiden purkamista tarvittaessa.

Viking apron dress

One long time dream completed here. I was supposed to do my 15^th century dress but I got sidetracked a little bit. This is the red Viking apron dress I cut at the end of 15^th century workshop and it is now done :). Oh how much I have always wanted this kind of dress for Summer! So last weekend I cut and hand sewed an underdress. I started to think about maybe finish this project for Double Wars (which is at Sweden, starting this weekend.. but I will go there on Tuesday next week). So because of this I ended up buying one of Sahra's gorgeous tablet woven braids for the dress. I will do my own for next apron dress. And today I got the glass beads form Essi via mail :). Let's see if I am able to finish that 15^th century dress too this weekend. I am already making lacing holes so not that much to do anymore, yay!

Tässä taas jälleen yksi pidempiaikainen unelma toteutettuna! Kevyt viikinkimekko kesäkelejä ajatellen. Miksei talveksikin, jos tekee vielä alusmekon villasta.. Jouduin hieman sivuraiteille 1400-luvun mekkoprojektista ja tein välipalana loppuun tämän viikinkimekon. Pari viikkoa sitten aloin ajattelemaan, että saattaisin saada tämän jopa valmiiksi ensi viikon Tuplasotaa varten (tapahtuma järjestetään Ruotsissa ja se alkaa itseasiassa jo tänä viikonloppuna). Leikkasin viime viikonloppuna alusmekon olkainmekkoa varten. Käsin kun ommellaan niin muutahan en tässä olekaan tehnyt kuin ommellut, mutta mekko on valmis :). Sahralta ostin lopulta valmiin lautanauhan koristeeksi mekkoon ja Essiltä tilasin lasihelmet. Saapa nähdä ehdinkö tekemään vielä sen 1400-luvun mekon Tuplaan, olen jo tekemässä nyörinreikiä, eli paljon ei ole enää siinäkään jäljellä :D.

Book challenge and learning kivrim

I have been busy with lots of different projects lately. Naalbinded socks for a friend are almost done. I am now making plans for next naalbinding projects. But first I need more wool. We went to see Sahra and Knut before Christmas. Sahra and I made a loom for my first flip and turn tablet weaving braid and she taught me how to do it. I am very happy that I learned more tablet weaving. Sahra is very good teacher! I have only made some simple braids before. The braid is for Jon’s red Viking kaftan. The kaftan is also sewn, I just need to finish the decoration braid and make a finishing braid inside it.

My Laurel, Mistress Katheryn and I have recognized how little we have had time to spend for reading books lately. I have been buying and getting more and more books and I have to admit that I have only read couple of them from beginning to the end. I have a bad habit of reading little bit there and there. So we decided that we want to challenge us to read more. I have now made a list of 6 books that I will read next year. Six sounds quite small amount but it is really not. It is one book in two months and I can say that as busy that we have been lately it will be a real challenge. I will keep you updated how the challenge goes..

Kaikenlaista hauskaa käsityötä on tullut tehtyä viime aikoina. Pino tekemättömiä töitä sen kun vaan kasvaa, mutta osa on sentään jo melkein valmiina! Ystävälle tarkoitetut neulakinnassukat ovat lähes valmiit ja Jontun viikinkitakki ommeltu, vielä puuttuu huolittelulautanauha sisäpuolelle ja koristelautanauha on melkein valmis. Ennen joulua kävimme Aistikkaassa Kodissa Sahran ja Knutin luona. Sahra auttoi minua vetämään elämäni ensimmäisen kivrim-lautanauhan loimen, juurikin tuon Jontun takin koristenauhan, josta kuva myös ylhäällä. Sahra on kyllä mainio opettaja! Olen aikaisemmin tehnyt lähinnä vain yksinkertaisia ja helppoja lautanauhoja, joten it's a big deal ;).

Mestarittareni Katherynin kanssa keskustelimme taannoin kirjoista ja siitä, kuinka niitä tulee haalittua, mutta tuntuu ettei aikaa ole kunnolla niiden lukemiseen. Meillä molemmilla on vähän huonona tapana ollut aloittaa kirjoja ja tai lukea niitä sieltä ja täältä. Siispä päätimme haastaa itsemme (ja miksei kaikki muutkin) lukuhaasteeseen. Tarkoituksena on lukea kuusi kirjaa kannesta kanteen ensi vuoden aikana. Kuusi saattaa kuulostaa vähäiseltä määrältä, mutta kiireiseen elämään se on kyllä enemmän kuin tarpeeksi! Tuossa ylhäällä on lista kirjoista jotka luen ensi vuonna. Kerron kyllä miten kävi ja pidinkö kirjoista vai en.

Nyt hauskaa ja lukurikasta uutta vuotta kaikille!

Viking Baggy Pants

I promised to tell more about UlfR’s new Viking baggy pants. I used thin tabby woven wool for the trousers. Trouser legs are lined with undyed linen. The pants are hand sewn and I used undyed linen thread for sewing. I pondered about what sewing thread should I use, silk or linen. But then I decide to use the linen, because I thought that it is probably better for men’s trousers. Time will tell, whether I have to fix the pants all the time or not.

I found a pattern for these pants from Historiska Världar’s web pages. Below there is a picture about the measurements I used. So really, one can easily spend 3 meters of fabric to one trouser leg. There are not that much information available about Viking men’s trousers. But for example Thor Ewing’s Viking Clothing book has some info about the pants. The book includes a drawing image of Hedebyn findings, which is thought to be part baggy pants. And also one can find pictures of the pants from stone carvings from that time of period.

There are apparently many interpretations of whether the pants have legs, or whether there are fairly narrow bands, which "collects" trousers below the knees. I ended up doing legs because UlfR’s leg wrappings are woollen and the wrapping horrible itchy if there are nothing between leg and the wrap.

Pants has been now tested at Rosala and UlfR has told me that they are very comfortable to wear. More photos about the pants and pants in progress in Picasa :).

Lupasinkin kertoa tarkemmin niistä UlfRin uusista viikinkipöksyistä. Eli olen käyttänyt materiaalina ohutta palttinasidoksellista villaa. Housujen lahkeet on vuorattu värjäämättömällä pellavalla. Olen ommellut housut käsin värjäämättömällä pellavalangalla. Mietin alkuun mitä lankaa käyttäisin. Käyttäisinkö silkkiä vai pellavaa. Päädyn sitten kuitenkin pellavaan, koska ajattelin että pellava olisi lankana kestävämpää. Aika näyttää, pitääkö housuja olla koko-ajan korjaamassa.

”Kaavan” pöksyihin otin Historiska Världarin sivuilla olevasta pdf dokumentista. Tässä kuitenkin alla vähän mittoja joita käytin. Eli tosiaan yhteen lahkeeseen upposi helposti 3 metriä. Kovin paljon tietoa viikinkiaikaisista miesten housuista ei ole. Mutta esim. Thor Ewingin Viking Clothing kirjassa on kappaleen verran kerrottu pussihousuista. Kirjassa on myös piirroskuva Hedebyn löydöstä, jonka on arveltu olevan kappale pussihousuja. Viitteitä housuista on löydettävissä myös tuon ajan kivikaiverruksista.

On olemassa ilmeisesti monta tulkintaa siitä onko housuissa lahkeita vai onko niissä ainoastaan kapeahkot nauhat, jotka ”keräävät” housut pussille polvien alapuolelle. Päädyin tekemään lahkeet siitä syystä, että UlfRin villaiset säärikääreet ovat paljasta säärtä vasten kamalan kutittavat. Lahkeet ovat näin ihon ja säärikääreen välissä.

Housut ovat olleet nyt koekäytössä Rosalassa ja ovat kuulemma oikein mukavat jalassa. Lisää valokuvia löytyy Picasasta :).

Winter Rosala 2011

UlfR and I were more than happy to get invitation to a private event last weekend. It was held at Rosala Viking Center which is on an island at Finland’s South coast. There were almost 70 people in many different Finnish re-enactment societies. We didn’t know most of them which means that now we have lots of new friends :). It was super cool to sleep, eat, live, have fun in Viking style longhouse. I took some pictures there.

UlfR’s baggy pants are finished! I will send a separate post about it later.

Olimme iloisia ja otettuja siitä, että meidät kutsuttiin viettämään hauskaa viikonloppua Rosalan viikinkikeskukseen viime viikonloppuna. Tapahtuma oli ihan täysi, siellä oli noin 70 henkilöä (ja kolme koiraa, joista yksi oli ainakin pienen ponin kokoinen). Ihmisiä oli useista eri historianelävöitysseuroista ympäri Suomea. Emme tunteneet kuin muutamia heistä ennalta, mikä tarkoittaa sitä, että tutustuimme paljon uusiin ihmisiin :). Oli makeeta nukkua, syödä, juhlia, oleilla viikinkityylisessä pitkätalossa koko viikonloppu! Otin myös muutamia kuvia sieltä.

UlfRin viikinkimiehen pöksyt ovat vihdoin valmiit! Laitankin niistä myöhemmin lisää juttua tänne.

After Christmas and New Year celebration

Yes, I was right I feel now more and more inspired. I have made plans for this year and it looks like I will be busy :D. I have couple of projects that I will start soon. And everything will be now a lot merrier when I opened one of my Christmas presents and there was the better camera that I have longed for! Now it is only up to me to learn how to use it.

My first naalbinded socks with round start are finished. I posted at October that I have learned how to make round start . Elsa got the socks for Christmas present.

I will start making new knee high socks using the round start for me soon. I bought wool from Elzebet at Dies St Anna event for the socks. She has hand dyed the wool with madder and it is very pretty. The socks will be great for my new garters also. I got these pretty garters with bronze spiral decorations from Sahra as Christmas present :). The graters are perfect Iron Age bling bling! Sahra has also hand dyed the wool with madder and the garter is based on findings at Kaarina Kirkonmäki cemetery (grave 27).

I have decorated my Birka coat with linen tablet woven band (also a gift but I got it at Academy) made by Tece. Now my coat looks more finished.

And I have started making Viking baggy pants for UlfR :D. But more about pants later I still have lots of sewing to do.

Joulun ja uuden vuoden juhlien jälkeen olo on inspiroitunut ja rentoutunut. Ensi vuoden suunnitelmat on tehty ja kaikenlaista kivaa on luvassa. Muutamat projektit alkavatkin jo heti miten. Projektien valossa tilanne näyttää entistäkin hauskemmalta, kun sain lahjaksi uuden kameran, jota olenkin pitkään toivonut! Nyt täytyy vaan oppia käyttämään sitä kunnolla.

Ensimmäiset pyöreällä aloituksella tehdyt sukat (joiden aloittamisesta olikin jo lokakuussa juttua) ovat nyt valmiit ja annettu joululahjaksi Elsalle.

Seuraavaksi teen uudet polvimittaiset sukat itselleni pyöreällä aloituksella. Minulla onkin kaunista Elzebethin käsin mataralla värjäämää villalankaa sukkiin, jotka ostin Annanpäiviltä. Sukat sopivat sitten mahtavasi Sahralta joululahjaksi saatuihin pronssisipiralleilla koristeltuihin sukkanauhoihin. Nuo sukkanauhoihin käytetyt langat on Sahra myös itse käsin värjännyt mataralla. Ja sukkanauhojen malli on peräisin Kaarinan Kirkonmäen haudasta nro 27.

Olen koristellut joulun alla Birkan takkini pellavasta tehdyllä lautanauhalla. Sain lautanauhan lahjaksi ruotsalaiselta Teceltä Akatemiassa :). Nyt takkikin näyttää viimeistellymmältä!

UlfRille olen aloitellut hiljattain myös tekemään viikinkiaikaisia pussihousuja. Niistä myöhemmin lisä.

Since Eevanpäivät event (which was weekend before last weekend) I have been in flu having no energy or strength to do anything. The event was great :D despite of little rain there was archery competition, heavy fighting… and little bit mushroom picking in forest. It wasn’t raining all the time.. And the food and the company was excellent! I manage to have the Birka jacket done for the event. It looks plain because there aren’t any decoration. I want to make tablet weaving decoration to it, but haven’t have energy to start making the loom. Sahra took some pictures..

Magdalen Yrjänäntytär gave me a surprise gift at the event. It is a fabulous rosary and I am very exited and happy to have this beautiful item. She made it for me in Canton of Poucca colours white and green.

Magdalen also have two blogs. One is about glass and glass beads (http://helmitaulu.blogspot.com/) and one is about re-enactment. She writes in Finnish.

I have also read lately Ilari’s blog “Mullan alta” with great interest. Ilari is a member of our society and he writes about he’s life as a student of archaeology. Unfortunately this is also only in Finnish.

Eevanpäivien jälkeen (eli toissa viikonlopun jälkeen) olen ollut flunssassa, eikä ole ollut oikein energiaa tai voimia tehdä yhtään mitään. Tapahtuma sen sijaan oli mahtavan hauska! Pienestä ajoittaisesta sateesta huolimatta oli jousiammuntaa, rottinkitreenejä.. sekä vähän sienien keruutakin. Värjäyssieniä ei ehditty löytämään. Mutta Sahra on kyllä aikamoinen tehopakkaus myös metsässä, täytyy sanoa. Meni ehkä muutama minuutti kun löytyi ensimmäinen (ja tosin ainut) kanttarelli. Ruoka oli myös mahdottoman hyvää kuten seura :). Birkan takki valmistui tapahtumaan ja oli siellä päällä ensimmäistä kertaa. Takki näyttää ehkä vähän pelkistetyltä vielä, kun koristus puuttuu. Tarkoituksena on luoda lautanauha koristeeksi heti kun ehtii ja jaksaa. Tuossa muutama kuva ylhäällä..

Sain Magdalen Yrjänäntyttäreltä aivan mahtavan hienon yllätyslahjan tapahtumassa. Magdalen tekee mm. lasihelmiä ja oli tehnyt hienon rukousnauhan Poukan pitäjän väreissä :D. Magdalen kirjoittaa myös blogia. Hänellä on niitä kaksi: toinen lasista ja lasihelmistä ja toinen historianelävöittämisestä.

Olen myös seurannut viime aikoina suurella mielenkiinnolla Ilarin Mullan alta blogia, arkeologian opiskelijan elämästä. Kivaa päästä lukemaan kaivauksista, kun me tavalliset tallaajat saadaan niin huonosti tietoa niistä ylipäätään. Todella mielenkiintoista!

Midsummer Coronation

We are back from Midsummer Coronation and from a very beautiful event site Storholmen (Nordmark, Sweden) http://www.storholmen.org . I am very tired and happy that today I have a day off from work. There is so much to tell about the event and I don’t know where to start :). It was nice to meet old friends and make new ones as well. The people at the Viking age village Storholmen was hospitable and kind. They have made lots of work at the village to reach its splendour. And what a beautiful garden they had there! I didn’t took any photos of my own at the event.. I was too lazy to do that but there are once again some good photos at Sahra’s blog.

The coronation itself was also very beautiful event. The new King and Queen of Drachenwald had made a big effort to make the ceremony exquisite. Part of the ceremony was in Latin and they come to the ceremony humbly without shoes. At the Saturday feast King Gerhardt and Queen Judith announced that we UlfR and Eva are the next baron and baroness of Aarnimetsä (Finland). Our Investiture is going to be held here at Aarnimetsä 11^th-13^th of September 2009. After that I don’t know what the future is going to hold for us but one thing is sure, there we are not able to be at the kitchen at the events for two years. Lots of people have been asking about are we going to miss the kitchen and the answer is sure! But it is good to have other challenges at time to time.

Before that there will be other events. This Thursday we are leaving to Turku Medieval Market (which is going to last till Sunday). Sahra and Suski are going to sell there jewellery, naalbinded things, tablet woven braids etc. Elsa and I have promised to help them.

Camping clothes and the hand sewing challenge

Yesterday was very hard day at work so after that I was too tired to do anything....

I hand sewed about 15 meters seams last week (mostly at weekend) and that means my blue linen Eura underdress and (un-dyed) linen apron (with tablet woven decorations) are finished. I now have clothes for camping and rolling in mud if needed :D. I decided not to make pants for UlfR... I didn’t have enough time for make the Thorsberg trousers and I had lots of other excuses not to do the pants yet. Today I will do some packing for Summer Coronation.

Btw. we have a hand sewing challege at our barony. It's about hand sewing 1000 meters of seams. I am definetely participating to that :) and I will send my progress here also. The challege begun at Summer Nights event.
