Aarnimetsä Investiture and new clothes

So much has happened since I last wrote. Summer was busy and I had (a little bit too high expectations) a plan what kind of new clothes I would want to do for the Investiture and our Divestiture. I bought the fabrics and made the patterns for all the clothes but managed only do a new shirts for us and pants for UlfR and a petticoat for me. I will how ever continue my project now after the event. Some day all will be done. Hopefully. But now I don’t have to stress about it anymore. Because I was so busy I didn’t have time to take many photos of our new clothing. But I got some photos from Beata and Izabella about us. Thank you Beata and Izabella :)! We are on our way to feast hall in these photos. At our divestiture we got crown barony and GoA awards and are now allowed to wear coronets after our reign too. Mistress Judith was very kind and lent her coronets for us for the event. We haven’t yet ordered our own coronets.

The event was fantastic in so many levels. We had medieval fireworks, a band “Räikkä” performing at the event.. lots of very good food and company etc. The arts and sciences competition was fun. It was called “Well, I Say. That Didn’t Go Quite As Planned…” and there were many entries.. and lots of laughter.

Next event for me is going to be Garden of Earthly Delights 21-23.10. at Barony of Knights Crossing, at Miltenberg (which is near to Frankfurt). UlfR will go to see Drachenwald Crown Tourney at Nordmark next weekend. I have been writing my other blog too and today made some new dishes for the blog. I think I should write a list about things that I would like to do in near future next. Also I have started to make food plans for All Hallows Feast. We will be in kitchen wohooo!!

Tosiaan paljon on tapahtunut siitä, kun viimeksi ehdin kirjoittamaan. Kesä oli kiirettä täynnä (oli markkinoita ja tapahtumia) ja minulla oli (ehkä vähän liiankin suuret odotukset) suunnitelma siitä, mitä uusia vaatteita aioin tehdä viime viikonlopun Investituuraa varten. (Siis onko siitä vasta viikko.. piti käydä tarkistamassa kalenterista). No lopulta sain tehtyä itselleni ja UlfRille uudet paidat, uudet housut UlfRille ja uuden alushameen itselleni. Ja aion tehdä ne loputkin vaatteet, kun niihin on kankaatkin ostettu. Nythän ei tarvitse enää stressata asiasta :). En ehtinyt kuvaamaan vaatteita kovinkaan paljon ennen tapahtumaa, mutta sain Beatalta ja Izabellalta muutamat kuvat meistä, jotka tuossa ylhäällä ovat. Paidoista on myös tuossa ylhäällä pari kuvaa. Koska saimme divestituuran yhteydessä hoviparoni ja GoA suosionosoitukset, saamme myös jatkossa käyttää seuran tapahtumissa kruunuja. Kuvissa olevat kruunut on meille tapahtumaa varten lainannut Mistress Judith. Omia emme ole vielä ehtineet tilaamaan.

Tapahtuma oli monella tapaa hieno. Oli ilotulitusta, Räikkä esiintymässä.. hyvää ruokaa ja seuraa. Tiede- ja taidekilpailu oli ehkä yksi parhaimmista ikinä. Teemana oli ”Ei mennyt niin kuin Hedebyssä..”. Erittäin hyvin onnistunut kilpailu kaikkinensa.

Seuraava tapahtuma, minne olen itse suuntaamassa, on Saksassa järjestettävä Garden of Earthly Delights tässä kuussa. UlfR taas menee seuraamaan Nordmarkiin kruununturnajaisia jo ensi viikonloppuna. Olen myös kirjoitellut toista blogiani ja tänään tein lisää ruokaa blogia varten. Pitäisi varmaan kirjoittaa seuraavaksi lista kaikesta mitä haluaa tehdä lähiaikoina. Tällä hetkellä kaikki on mielessä yhtenä sekamelskana. Olen myös aloittanut suunnittelemaan marraskuun alussa järjestettävän Kekri -tapahtuman ruokalistaa. Me päästään taas keittiöön, jee!!

Some progress and something small

Last weekend we went to Lahti to see Sahra and Knut. I was feeling little bit down before the weekend (one of the symptoms in Fibromyalgia.. well who likes the pain when it’s bad and you can’t do things you want to do??). I thought that changing the surroundings would help and it did. We found (almost too much) great wool fabrics at Lahti Eurokangas (fabric store).. and I will have thin wool for UlfR’s Viking style baggy pants and so on. I have decided long time ago that I want to make the pants for him when I have time to do that (but finding the fabric has been the obstacle in this project). Sahra and I ordered leg wraps to UlfR and Knut form internet. UlfR has had problems with shoes… especially winter shoes at the events (he doesn’t have any period shoes for the winter times). But now I have ordered some for him so we are getting more and more to the authenticity level we want to be in.

Also our wedding dress project is proceed… this is a sneak peak and I will not tell yet what is it :D

Oh and I have also a book about calligraphy for beginners. I would like to start practising it as soon as I have right tools for it.

Handkerchiefs

Last two weeks I have been doing things mostly not for me but for the gift and award basket. As I told last time Elsa made a blackwork pattern for Aarnimetsä wolf and she embroidered some handkerchiefs for the gift basket. Last weekend we went to Elsa’s and made more things together. I once again have problems with my hand… the hand didn’t like tablet weaving (stupid hand).

Here is a picture of the handkerchiefs and a pattern. We wanted it to be as simple as possible.

A creative weekend

The next thing is starting to make the wedding dresses for us. The easiest part I thought was to start with headdresses. Elsa was visiting us this weekend and we tried to make a wulsthaube type German renaissance headdress with veil. We found some links also and this was one of the best we found: http://www.in-nova-corpora.ch/naehstube/ma_15_unterkleidung_text.htm .We managed to make a prototype of it and it looks very good. I am not going to reveal all the details of the wedding dress project.. other wise it could spoil the surprise :D but I can reveal some small things. This makes the blogging quite challenging but let’s see what will happen. I can reveal that I am going to make blackwork stripes to the veil and the veil is going to be quite long so lots of blackwork to do :D.

I also taught the basics of blackwork to Elsa this weekend (well I actually think that there wasn’t anything new that she didn’t know already). As a very creative person she designed a blackwork pattern of our Barony of Aarnimetsä’s wolf and she have already embroidered three handkerchiefs with the wolf this weekend to give away as gifts. I also started to do some simple blackwork to one of the napkins (or handkerchiefs…). As I told I need to do couple of handkerchiefs for me also. The handkerchiefs are not done yet.. but when they are I can (if I get her permission to do so) send a photo of them here. But now.. I can’t wait to start making the veil. I have to go to cut the linen and start making the blackwork and I know already the pattern I want to use.

Another great weekend

This weekend I attended Lahti Handicraft Fair with Medium Aevum Hollolense re-enactment group. I took some pictures at the fair but the pictures are all blurry and not very good. But there are some pictures at the group’s web pages http://www.keskiaika.fi/?sivu=Kuvagalleria&id=248 and you might found me also there doing some blackwork embroidery. I had my Assisi tablecloth project with me and a lucet. It was good idea to have two handicrafts with me because after awhile you probably want to do something else. Medium Aevum Hollolense group was the only history/ medieval/ Viking re-enactment group at the fair so they got lots of attention. There were lots of old ladies and lords who wanted to talk about old handicraft techniques and for example naalbinding. And of course there were lots of artisans who were interested in our clothing and especially the thing that we do so much with our hands. The lodge next to our lodge was selling embroidery machines. It was pretty comical to sit next to the embroidery machine to do embroidery by hands. So the machine and I had a little competition about the spectators attentions. 

Because I have been extremely busy during last weeks I haven’t have tome to do the open-fronted Flemish gown or even started to do it. Last week I managed to make he sleeves for the gown. So I don’t know yet what to wear at St Homobonus Feast this weekend. I have been sick today so I might wear something old but warm.

It is finished but…

During my Easter holiday I finally finished my hand sewed Italian chemise. So it is finished but I am not happy about it. I like the fullness of the chemise and I think the sleeves and the length of the chemise is pretty ok. But the neckline… Ok I admit that I didn’t put too much time and effort on sewing the neckband to the chemise (because I knew that I am not going to like the neckline when it is finished). But still it is very frustrating to know that I need to take the neckband away and sew it back again. I know that it is common that when you sew you might have to undo it and do it again. Sometimes you have to do it more than once. I just hate it! I want everything to be perfect at the first time so I can start to do something else. The neckband is not cut on the bias because I wanted to make some blackwork in it. Usually when cutting the neckband to the square neck hole you should cut it on the bias http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_(textile). So I really don’t know if I am ever going to be happy with my chemises neckline. We shall see. I will try to find mental strength to start it over again today.
