Summer!

This might sound like a school essay titled “What did I do last summer” because it has been so long since I had time to write here and so many marvellous and wondrous things has happen!

Turku Medieval Market

Summer this far has been full of interesting events and medieval markets and unspeakable and awful heat a.k.a. scorchio (as someone has described it) anyway something hotter than hot never seen before in these latitude (or at least I haven’t seen). Week after Midsummer we and Elsa went to Turku Medieval Market. This time we didn’t spend long time at the market area. At Saturday we went to see Turku Castle. At the Historical Museum we saw an archaeological display of items they had found recently at one of the excavations at Turku. For me the most exiting finding for me was a piece of weaving heddle or rigid heddle or heddle for weaving simple bands (it’s very hard to find a good term in English for it) from 15th century. It interests me because I want to learn the technique.

A piece of rigid heddle/ kappale pirtaa

Also very interesting was two pieces of woollen fabrics which had kept their colours quite well.

A pieces of red twill and green tabby/ pala punaista toimikasta ja vihreää palttinaa

And this piece of leather belt (there was a pouch, but I don't have good picture of it/ lisäksi tämä nahkainen vyön kappale (lisäksi nähtävillä oli vyölaukku, josta minulla ei ole kunnollista kuvaa)

New clothes

After Turku Medieval Market I had one normal work day and then my vacation finally started. I sewed like a crazy again for the Cudgel War (the new smock and a new kercief I finished at the event) and finished the new wollen Flemish peasant underdress for me. UlfR also managed to finish his braies. At Thursday we left to the event site (to help the event crew to fix the site for Friday when the event started).

Cudgel War

Was a great event once again! This time I looked the event from the other perspective than I used to see it (means I didn’t spend the event at the kitchen). The heat made the event little bit challenging for the people but we survived and enjoyed the event anyway! It meant that people didn’t wear their woollen clothes all the time and they spend more time at the lake and at the sauna. At evenings when sun went down and air cooled little bit people seemed to got their strength back. This Cudgel War was the first Cudgel War for me to have time to go and see the war at the battlefield. And I saw almost all the tournaments that were held during the event. And the greatest thing of all was of course Oliver’s elevation to knighthood. It is very rare event here at the Aarnimetsä.

Arts and sciences lectures and workshops was this year better than ever in my opinion. Helena’s Herjolfsnes gown workshop was very good. I didn’t start my own but I helped Kerttu to cut her one. I am sure that now when I have the instructions about how to cut it I will cut mine soon. I hope to get some help for the fitting (which is always the question for me because I don’t have anybody here living near to us to help me).

I also went to Katheryn’s reliquary pouch (or alms pouch) class and started to make one for me. It is not finished yet. I hope that it will not turn out to be an UFO at the end of the year. I was more than happy that Estrid from Shire of Harpelstane (Scotland) taught me some basics about rigid heddle weaving!! (I have now ordered a rigid heddle for me from Lankadontti, I want to start learning as soon as possible).

War/ sota

Hollola Medieval Market

Only a week after Cudgel War we went to Hollola Medieval Market. The market are held only every other year and some of the arrangers are our friends and we are paid members of Hollola Medieval Society aka Medieum Aevum Hollolense. We don’t live near to them and that’s why we seldom have opportunity to participate their activities, so I think that we are more like support members. This was our first Hollola Medieval Market and I really have to say that it was the best medieval market I have attended. Why, well it has more heart and soul and better atmosphere than I have ever seen. This time we saw the market from kitchen and from fire place. It is not very often that we have a chance to do food for 50 people at the open fire. The food was simple and it was for the people that were selling their things at the “big camp”. I really enjoyed the market!

So what next? We are having three weeks without any plans! I have some ideas what to do next… but before that I will make our Viking wardrobe better. This month we’ll go to Sahra’s and visit Hämeenlinna Medieval Market. And I will start making plans and probably some new things for Civil War at Nordmark which is held at the first weekend of October. Yes, it looks like that we are going there, Yay!

Kuumuus aiheutti omat haasteensa tapahtumalle, mutta me selvittiin!

Short update

Mom wanted me to do some update ;)...

My new smock is not done yet but over half is done at least. I have my corset at home and I have to do the lacing holes and insert the bones into it so I could start making the gown. After that the corset is almost done. There are so many things to do and too little time. I think that I now have all materials I need for my Investiture outfit. I don’t even want to count how many days I have left till the event at this point.

Yesterday I baked some excellent small cakes and Shrewsbury cakes and today I’ll do some pepper bisuquits for next weekend (for Hämeenlinna Medieval Market). Busy life... but I am sure that despite all this hustle now and at next weekend... the next weekend is going to be fun! (Also my new raspberry liqueur looks beautiful and delicious.. I started to make it at last Friday).

Verla and hand sewing challenge

Another interesting and great weekend behind... Near to town of Kouvola is Verla Mill which is one of the World’s Heritage sites at Finland. The mill is from 19th century (so it is not medieval but very beautiful site). Last Saturday there was a small medieval market at Verla where we also attended. Canton of Miehonlinna had some activities (especially for children) at the market. There was some archery, dancing and armour fitting for the spectators and a tablet weaving demonstration also. I had enough time to finish UlfR’s Investiture shirt at the event. All in all it was a very good event, the weather was fantastic and there was surprisingly many spectators at the market (it was the first time they had this kind of market at Verla). After the market we went to Katariina’s home so she could take UlfR’s measurements for his other Investiture clothing. And after that we had cheerful evening at the Karhu residence.

Yesterday I finally did some counting for the hand sewing challenge. This I have made so far:

Blue Eura underdress (started before the competition started so not all counted): 14,82 m

Viking Finn apron with tablet woven decorations: 3,62 m

UlfR’s Kragelund tunic: 22,42 m

a green pouch: 1,44 m

UlfR’s headscarf: 2,28 m

UlfR’s blue kitchen tunic: 12,06 m

UlfR’s Investiture shirt: 15,04 m

All together (hand made seams after Summer Nights): 71,68 m

Hm.. it seems like I have made lots of things for UlfR and not so much for me... well next thing is to make a new smock with ruffled sleeves for me :) ... starting NOW.

Here are some photos about the smock and making the kirtle. I have bought the red linen many years ago from Raijan Aitta http://www.raijanaitta.fi/ .

21.9.

The smock is finished now. I started to make the kirtle today. I have decided to make linen kirtle with waist seam. Why? Because I think that it will be cooler at the kitchen than woollen kirtle. That is not a very good explanation why, so I will make woollen kirtle also when I have time and test it at the kitchen. I mean that the kirtles under these Flemish open-fronted gowns are probably made by wool http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/aertsen/cook-stove/cook-stove.jpg . I want to make kirtle with waist seam, because that way I can have probably enough support to the bodice. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad idea yet :D.

Interesting week

This week has been very interesting. I have been at Tuusula which is near to Helsinki (Monday to Friday) on the in-service training which is related to my work. I was lucky to have a change to stay at Tofa’s during evenings and nights. The in-service training place was very gloomy and dull… for “normal people” so sleeping in familiar place was a very good thing. I didn’t bring that many projects with me because I knew already that the week is going to be (mentally) hard…. well sitting eight-nine hours (thank good less than that some days) is something I don’t miss from the school times. Even when the subjects are very interesting… or let’s say honestly… most of the subjects…

The smock is not yet finished. I had to cut it smaller. Fun thing was that I was able to make my first socks (I have had lots of help since year 2002 or something…). I have started again this sock project last time six months ago (or something). It has been very frustrating because I couldn’t figure out how the pattern or patterns works. So it has been clearly a stumbling block to me. And again most of the fears about that I can’t understand how to make something like socks, has been only in my head. But more about the socks soon. I have just finished the first one… and I am very eager to go to finish that other one.

I put some pictures about the Assisi tablecloth project into my Flick account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evagrelsdotter/

Smock

I have started to make a smock for the Flemish dress. The neckline is done :D. I love white linen.. it is so beautiful fabric.
